Do you *really* need an expensive camera?

Photo by Susannah TuckerWhen I was on vacation this weekend, I saw so many people sporting really expensive cameras. My boyfriend and I drove up to Niagara Falls to stand in the wonderful mist and cool off during the heat wave. While getting drenched and soaking up the gorgeous visage of a double rainbow forming over the falls, I was also checking out cameras.

Some of those cameras made me green with envy.

But the question arises: were those people with the $3000 cameras actually getting good pictures? Sometimes, just from the ways in which they were setting their shots up, I knew the answer was "No".

So, do you really need an expensive camera?

Joanna's Foto has a really great discussion on how much camera you actually need:

Maybe, you don’t need an expensive camera?

Also, did you catch the article I wrote for Etsy on which Digital Camera you should buy?

Etsy Success: The Right Camera

Remember, it's the photographer that makes the pictures - not the camera. The camera is just a tool, the vision is yours!

totally agree! Although, I think if you're making a living at photography it really pays off to have the highest-end camera/lens you can. You have so much more flexibility with them. Like, for instance, I have to shoot low light A LOT so having a camera with a huge ISO range is important to me.

But I think people walking around with a 2 or 3 thousand dollar camera on automatic is just depressing...

Kristi -

You make a great point! I agree that if someone is making a living doing photography then it definitely pays to invest. Especially when it comes to lenses!

Jen, thank you for the mention!

Just to add to Kristi's comment, above.
I agree with you. And I would expect, that if someone is using their equipment to make a living- they are more willing to learn how to use it.
It's more camera users, that "snap pics" and this is just a little fun activity, which doesn't really lead to anything more than- "snapping pics". Some of those camera users like to blame equipment for their unsuccessful shots.

Joanna,

Of course! I loved your article and it's a topic that I think warrants bringing up again and again.

My favorite compliment is "Oh that's a great photo - you must have a really good camera!!"

Lol!

That would be like telling a chef:"Oh, this is a spectacular meal! You must have a really good oven!"

(I read that somewhere a while ago and it made me laugh ;)
